Mephistopheles

The Concept

Some projects begin with a brief. This one began with a feeling — the sense that darkness, properly lit, reveals more than light alone ever could.

Mephistopheles draws on the archetype from Goethe’s Faust — the devil who is not monstrous, but seductive. Elegant. Entirely at ease. The danger in Mephistopheles is not his ferocity but his charm: the way he makes the bargain seem reasonable, the price seem small.

The Approach

The shoot took place against a Gothic architectural backdrop, with smoke, theatrical lighting, and a single subject asked to embody contradiction — power and vulnerability, formality and abandon, the ancient and the contemporary. The tartan grounds the figure in Scotland; the throne and smoke lift him out of time entirely.

This is a project about duality. About the parts of human nature we dress up and the parts we leave bare.
